Sunil Chhetri, India's famous
striker, would be second only to Cristiano Ronaldo in the list of highest
active international goalscorers if Estonia had not conceded five goals to
Lionel Messi this month. After scoring four goals in the just-completed third
round of qualification for the 2023 Asian Cup, the 37-year-old has 84 points,
two behind the Argentinian.
This haul helped India win all three games and qualify for the continent's premier event for the second time. Chhetri is anxious, though, that he may not be able to compete in the event – and not because there is now no host, after China's decision last month to surrender those responsibilities. The fear is that India may be sanctioned by FIFA.
"I hope everything turns out well for the sport
and the country avoids a ban," Chhetri remarked earlier this month. "The
prohibition will be disastrous not just for the country as a whole, but also

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been in upheaval, despite the national team's increasing participation in continental competitions. poor performance, disappointment with the performances of various age-level
sides, and concerns about women's football. It was suggested that the AIFF
concentrate on the grassroots. The supreme court has been tasked with resolving
the federation's election issues.

Patel's tenure came to an end as a
result of this. His third term, the maximum allowed, ended in December 2020,
but a fresh election, in which he would be unable to run, was not held (Patel
claiming that a constitutional issue needed to be resolved first), and he
remained in office. The court tasked a three-man committee of administrators

The supreme court of Pakistan ordered football federation elections in 2018, which Ashfaq Hussain won. Fifa never acknowledged his triumph, and in March 2021, he led a mob that attacked the Pakistan federation's headquarters in Lahore, throwing out Fifa's normalisation committee. The ban is still in place, as is the turmoil. India is not like Pakistan, which loves football but has nearly vanished from Asian football's radar due to self-interested authorities and a national squad that has only played seven games in the last seven years, none since 2019.
