 'Roger Federer The GOAT

Andre Agassi, an eight-time Major champion, had the opportunity to meet rising prodigy Roger Federer in Basel in 1998. The American won convincingly, but he was confident that Roger possessed special tennis knowledge and skills that would guide him to glory.

It was the third ATP tournament for the incredibly gifted adolescent, who arrived in Basel ranked 396th after reaching the first ATP quarter-final a week earlier in Toulouse. The draw in his hometown was brutal, pitting Federer against world no. 8 Andre Agassi, who was back on track after a slump in 1997.

To control the tempo, the more experienced opponent required only 1 hour to defeat the young junior 6-3, 6-2, delivering more wins and committing fewer errors. Agassi struggled to find the first serve (48%), but it had no effect on his game. He dropped 14 points in nine service games and broke Federer once out of two chances.

Roger never found his groove against a top-10 opponent, except from a few excellent service games. The home player dropped nearly half of his games' points and was broken four times out of eight opportunities presented to the American. Agassi had 19 service wins to Federer's 13, with the Swiss hitting 10 from the field and the American having eight.

Andre perfected his shots with depth and precision, committing seven unforced errors to the youngster's twenty, while Roger missed equally from both wings. Agassi forced 13 errors from Federer while remaining on ten.

The American dominated the longest exchanges, taking seven out of nine to round out his outstanding effort.

In-game two, Agassi took an early break and held comfortably for a 3-0 lead. After four deuces, Roger saved a break point in game four to get his name on the scoreboard, followed by another easy hold for Agassi, who moved ahead 4-1. Following 30 minutes, the American led 5-2 after service victories and sealed the opener on serve in game nine.

The teenager started the second set with a double fault and then made three more to drop service, forcing him to chase the result from the start. Federer converted his second break point in game two to tie the game at 1-1. He took the lead in the third game with a hold at love before committing blunders at 2-2 to lose the game.

Andre scored another break to extend his lead to 5-2 before sealing the deal with four wins in game eight. "I recognized I was playing against the future greatest player of all time the day I faced Federer," Andre Agassi stated.
